through nonprofit eyes: Philanthropic Holidays

While compiling this post on some successful Mother's Day fundraising campaigns, I mentioned that there may be opportunities to plan various fundraising/stewardship/marketing campaigns around some of the more random, and not-so-random, holidays. Some are fun, some are serious, but many provide you the opportunity to engage constituents and provide urgency where none may have previously existed.

I have gone through a collection of extensive holiday lists and whittled the list down to 519 that may have a context for a philanthropic effort. I stress the word may. For example, January 4 is Creativity Day and early March has a holiday called "Namesake Day." The former may work for museums, education and some other niches. The latter may work for something like Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other name-bearing charities. I have classified all of the potential holidays and provide them to you on this page. They are broken into the following categories:

General Philanthropy
Animals
Community
Cultural
Education
Environment
Fun (these are worth looking at regardless of whether or not you use them!)
Health
Relief / International
Religion

How to tackle this list:

Think about how long it takes for your organization/office to create a small campaign (from the initial idea through completion). 3 months? 6? 9?
Add an extra 2-4 weeks to that time frame since this is likely to be a new idea altogether.
With that time frame in mind, go to the following three categories: General Philanthropy, Fun, and the category above with which your organization best associates.
Look at the month that would be at your time frame (identified in the second step above) for each category and see if anything inspires you, humors you or otherwise works.

Notes:

There is overlap between the groups.
Date included when the date is consistent annually.
If no date is included for a "Day" holiday, it means the date is inconsistent/variable from year-to-year. (Example, "Martin Luther King Day - January")
All "Week" holidays are variable dates each year.
A couple that I think are must-use-holidays are in bold italics.
If you see one and are stumped as to why I included it... send me an email and I'll give you any ideas I have.
I have not researched every holiday... so the meaning may be different than one would assume from the title. It is worth researching the origin of the holiday when considering whether or not to use it. (Ex: You don't want to send a stewardship email to all of your donors on National Donor Day in February, only to realize later that the holiday refers to organ donors.
